2022 Leadership for Directors 2 Day Courses

Leadership for Directors Course

Chartered Management Institute Recognised Training Centre for Director Training Courses.

We will be exploring the implications, responsibilities, challenges and opportunities for leaders; as well as the main styles and attributes of good leadership. The course will look at leadership ideas from a broad range of perspectives, including published research from McKinsey and Harvard. In every case we will emphasise what has worked and what will work in practice and any limitations in some of the theoretical approaches. There is a great emphasis on the real world and evidence based success drawn from extensive published research as to which leadership styles and actions have been proven to generate genuine sustainable success.

Great leadership requires the simultaneous application of:
• The right actions
• To be done at the right times
• In the right way

The Leadership for Directors course will connect directors with the latest research and operational thinking in the area of leadership. Research papers will only be referenced, if they have been published in at least one globally reputable journal. The two days will be based on best practice examples, drawn from a variety of environments and built around a succession of practical exercises and relevant discussion points.

  • Leadership for Directors Course Overview

Institute of Leadership and Management approved training centre for Leadership and Management training courses

Leadership is about inspiring and motivating groups of people to perform at their peak. Team performance can often be improved, or made worse, simply by changing the team leader. Good leadership encourages a better outcome from the group, than they would otherwise produce.

Good Leadership creates a sense of purpose and belonging amongst the group. Everybody knows what the overall organisation’s purpose is and where they fit in. Team work is promoted and respected, alongside individual talent. All the team members strive for the success of the organisation, and that of the team, as well as their personal success. Nobody wants to let anybody else down and everyone is team and client/customer focussed.

Good leadership is invaluable to any organisation. It increases sustainable profits, helps to motivate and retain good people, as well as increasing customer satisfaction and retention. Everybody wins and the workplace generally becomes a much happier and more successful business environment.

Great leadership is about connecting the different functions of the business, in such a way that their combined performance is greater than the sum of their separate performance parts. It is akin to the extra value and quality that a great conductor brings to a group of individual musical virtuosos.

Some points to consider about leaders that will be addressed in this course:

    • Most people become leaders with very limited or perhaps no formal leadership training or advice
    • Leadership is not easy; although anyone might do a decent job of steering the ship when the waters are calm; it takes a great leader to handle choppy waters
    • The final 20% of individual work effort is said to be discretionary and therefore requires extra encouragement and motivation
    • Some teams and organisations, undoubtedly perform much better than many others with equally qualified and experienced staff, whilst facing apparently similar competitive forces and regulatory procedures
    • Levels of sickness or absence vary enormously between teams and organisations employing similar people to fulfil the same roles within the same sectors
    • Change is constant; whilst some leaders welcome and embrace change, looking for the new opportunities within it.  Others pointlessly fight against it.  The tide cannot be held back, no matter how hard you push
    • Some organisations demand blind obedience, often confusing it with real commitment
    • Some leaders work to the wrong time horizon; chasing ever greater short term success at the expense of long term sustainable success
    • Some organisations fail to define what success looks like and how they are going to measure it, which makes it very difficult to recognise when you get there, or even if you are progressing towards your target

This Leadership for Directors course will explain why good leadership is one of the most important factors necessary for sustainable success. It will explain the attributes and skills needed to be a great leader. Directors will learn that good leadership arises from the application of personal attributes applied using expert learned knowledge and organisational tactics.

To ensure that the Leaders attending this training course will get the maximum possible benefit from their time and that the discussions will be at their most effective; the delegate numbers are limited to a maximum of 9. However, for internal single company courses, if requested to do so, we would be prepared to accommodate more attendees.

  • Leadership for Directors Course Learning Objectives

    Some points to consider

Some points to consider about leaders and leadership that will be addressed in this course:

    • Most people become leaders with very limited or perhaps no formal leadership training or advice. In what other business area would people attempt to succeed without seeking help?
    • Leadership is not easy; although anyone might do a decent job of steering the ship when the waters are calm; it takes a great leader to handle choppy waters
    • The final 20% of individual work effort is said to be discretionary and therefore requires extra encouragement and motivation from good leaders
    • Some teams and organisations, undoubtedly perform much better than many others with equally qualified and experienced staff, whilst facing apparently similar competitive forces and regulatory procedures. This is often due to the differences between the leaders
    • Levels of sickness or absence vary enormously between teams and organisations employing similar people to fulfil the same roles within the same sectors. This has been attributed in many cases to the quality of the leadership
    • Change is constant; whilst some leaders welcome and embrace change, looking for the new opportunities within it. Others, less able, pointlessly fight against it. The tide cannot be held back, no matter how hard you push. The best leaders learn to recognise those tidal forces and to harness and work with the power of the tides
    • Some organisations demand blind obedience, often confusing it with real commitment. Great leaders understand the differences between Hierarchical Power (Command Authority) and Personal Power (Leadership), which causes people to do things for you because they want to, not because they have to
    • Some leaders work to the wrong time horizons; chasing ever greater short term success at the expense of long term sustainable success. Highly effective leaders recognise the importance of Strategic Objectives and their KPIs. They understand how to move towards those long term goals whilst at the same time successfully navigating through the short term
    • Some organisations fail to understand and define what success looks like and how they are going to measure it, which makes it very difficult to recognise success when you achieve it, or even if you are progressing towards your overall target

    • Have a very good understanding of their own natural leadership style, and its strengths and weaknesses
    • Know and understand the impacts of the main leadership styles
    • Recognise how to adjust their own leadership styles to suit the strengths and weaknesses of their own team members
    • Fully understand the roles and responsibilities of leaders
    • Recognise how to determine the best ways to improve their own performances as leaders and the performances of their teams and how to develop the individuals within those teams
    • Be able to understand the requirements their own style of leadership and how that impacts the performance of their teams
    • Have a clear idea of how to tackle essential matters such as motivation and communication
    • Identify how to measure their personal leadership attributes and how to benchmark their current level of leadership skills
    • Identify the importance of emotional intelligence and self-awareness
    • Learn how to begin to shape and develop their personal leadership characteristics, as well as their leadership skills and knowledge
