Inspectors will seek evidence of the impact of those responsible for governance. They will determine whether they provide confident, strategic leadership and create strong accountability for and oversight and assurance of the educational performance, to ensure continuous and sustainable improvement.

Inspectors will also consider whether those responsible for governance:

  • know the provider and understand its strengths and weaknesses
  • support and strengthen the provider’s leadership and contribute to shaping its strategic direction
  • ensure that the provider meets its statutory responsibilities
  • provide challenge and hold senior leaders and managers to account for improving the quality of learning and the effectiveness of performance management systems.

This course has been completely updated, so that it covers the Roles & Responsibilities implicit in the EIF and the Ofsted FE Handbook that were implemented on 1 September 2019 and are still effective. These Ofsted inspection arrangements place significant importance and responsibility on the role of “The Nominee”.  However, it is clear that in the best provisions the Governors play a very important role.

This 2 and a half hour workshop sets out the key roles and responsibilities of an individual Governor as well as the collective roles and responsibilities of the Board of Governors.  For this particular workshop, online live course delivery using Zoom is a major advantage, as it gives Governors a unique opportunity to interact and exchange experiences with Governors from other colleges and institutions.

It is imperative that Colleges, Learning Providers and other organisations, subject to FE & Skills Inspections, plan ahead to ensure that their provision is both effective and will be seen to be effective by the external inspectors.  This one-day workshop is designed to provide exactly the right level of training for Boards of governors and other senior management responsible for the overall direction of the organisation.

This workshop provides high quality practical and pragmatic guidance on how Governors can make a significant contribution towards the achievement of a successful Ofsted Inspection grade and offer support to the organisation and its senior staff throughout the year.  It will enable Governors to better understand and maximise the effectiveness of their role, both before and during inspection.

Colleges and Learning Providers aiming for good or outstanding inspection results cannot afford to compromise on the quality of their provision or on their preparation for an Ofsted inspection.  The Governors play a critical role, in helping to ensure that the inspection result accurately reflects the quality of the provision.

This role of the Governors is often even more critical for providers already evaluated as being Grade 2 and Grade 1.  As a poor initial visit by Ofsted HMI’s could result in a full inspection and lower grades.

The workshop is developed and delivered by Excellence in Learning. It is not an official Ofsted event.  Where official Ofsted Nominee Training is available, we would recommend attendance at both, as the content emphasis may differ.

  • Who would Benefit from Attening This Course

This 2.5 hour workshop will be of interest to anyone who contributes towards the Governance or Leadership functions within a Learning Provider.  Typically these would be the Board of Governors and other senior management.

Inspectors will satisfy themselves that those responsible for governance understand their responsibilities and are ensuring that these are carried out appropriately within the provider.

It is suitable for all FE & Skills organisations subject to inspection by Ofsted under the Education Inspection Framework.  This includes Colleges, WBL and ACL providers and some 6th Forms.

This workshop is heavily biased towards the FE & Skills sector inspections. The content in respect of presenting evidence, questioning and challenging findings is highly relevant to everyone in the sector.  But it is not intended for staff from schools or academies, which are not subject to the Education Inspection Framework.

This training workshop, along with most of our other best practice training workshops, can be delivered as an internal training course at your premises. Even with groups as small as 6 delegates, the course fees per person for internal training workshops can be lower than for open events. The potential savings are even greater, if the travel time and the travel costs of the delegates are included.

Running training workshops internally is very convenient many of our clients and allows the participants to explore how key issues will impact on them and their organisation. Then as a team they can begin to agree upon development action plans and assign priorities. This approach is favoured by many of our clients as it combines a high quality service with excellent value for money and is a highly effective route for staff development.
